The Procedure

Bariatric Surgery in Miami for Montclair, NJ Patients

Bariatric surgery reduces the size of the stomach, and some procedures also reroute part of the digestive tract. Smaller meals leave you satisfied, and hunger tends to ease. Dr. K uses minimally invasive techniques, working through small incisions.

Once your testing is done, surgery dates often open within the same month, so you are not left waiting. Getting here from Upper Montclair or Glen Ridge is simple: about 24 minutes down the Garden State Pkwy S to Newark Liberty, a nonstop flight of about 3 hours to MIA, then about 17 minutes to our office. One surgeon follows your case from start to finish.

Weight Loss Procedures Dr. K Performs

Candidacy

Who Is a Good Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery

Your weight alone does not decide whether you qualify. Dr. K reviews your weight history, related health conditions, the approaches you have already tried and how ready you are for the new way of eating after surgery.

  • You have struggled to keep weight off through diet, exercise or medication.
  • Your weight is linked to conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea or joint pain.
  • You are ready to follow a pre-surgery diet and to change how you eat for the long term.
  • You can complete medical clearances and an upper endoscopy before surgery.
  • You use a GLP-1 injection and want to know whether medication, surgery or both makes sense.

For some patients, another step makes more sense first, like bringing a medical condition under control. That first step can be an endoscopic procedure or medical weight loss.

Why the right answer is sometimes GLP-1 medication, sometimes surgery and sometimes both.

Questions

FAQ for Patients Traveling From Montclair, NJ

Do I need to fly to Miami for my consultation?

Not at all. Consultations can be virtual, so you can talk with Dr. K from home. Your trip to South Miami is for the surgery itself, after your plan and testing are set.

What will I pay for bariatric surgery if I cover it myself?

The gastric sleeve package is $14,000. It includes your hospital stay and first-year follow-up, and Cherry financing is available. Pricing for other procedures is reviewed at your consultation.

What disqualifies you for bariatric surgery?

Rarely does one factor rule you out. Dr. K looks at your health history, the medications you take, your medical clearances and how prepared you are to change how you eat after surgery. When surgery is not the best place to begin, an endoscopic procedure or medical weight loss can come first.

Can I do my pre-surgery tests near Montclair, NJ?

You can. The required medical clearances and upper endoscopy can be completed with us or at an outside facility closer to home. Our team lets you know which tests you need and goes over the results with Dr. K.

How long does it take to lose 50 pounds after weight loss surgery?

Results vary with your starting weight, your procedure and how carefully you stick to the diet after surgery. Most weight tends to come off quickest in the early months. At your consultation, Dr. K gives you an honest estimate for your procedure.

Can I keep taking my GLP-1 injection before surgery?

GLP-1 injections need to stop at least two weeks before surgery. Dr. K can also help you decide whether medication, surgery or a mix of both suits your goals.
