The Procedure

Bariatric Surgery in Miami for Boston, MA Patients

Bariatric surgery reduces the size of the stomach. Some procedures also reroute part of the digestive tract. Smaller portions then fill you up, and hunger signals ease. Dr. K uses minimally invasive techniques and small incisions for these operations.

From your first call to your last follow-up visit, the same surgeon knows your case. Getting here is simple. Boston Logan is about 10 minutes from downtown via MA-1A N without traffic. A nonstop flight to Miami International takes about three and a half hours, and our South Miami office is about 17 minutes (12 miles) from there. Most patients make a single trip for surgery.

Your Options

Weight Loss Procedures Dr. K Performs

Bariatric surgery covers several procedures rather than one operation. Because Dr. K offers surgical, endoscopic and nonsurgical options, your health guides the recommendation instead of a single technique.

Candidacy

Who Is a Good Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery

A scale reading is only part of the picture. Dr. K reviews your weight history, the health conditions linked to your weight, what you have tried before and how ready you are for the eating changes after surgery.

  • You have struggled to keep weight off through diet, exercise or medication.
  • Your weight is linked to conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea or joint pain.
  • You are ready to follow a pre-surgery diet and to change how you eat for the long term.
  • You can complete medical clearances and an upper endoscopy before surgery.
  • You use a GLP-1 injection and want to know whether medication, surgery or both makes sense.

For some patients, another step makes sense first, like bringing a medical condition under control. Medical weight loss or an endoscopic procedure may come before surgery.

Why the right answer is sometimes GLP-1 medication, sometimes surgery and sometimes both.

Questions

FAQ for Patients Traveling From Boston, MA

Do I need to fly to Miami for my consultation?

Not at all. Consultations are offered virtually, so you can meet Dr. K from home in Boston. The trip to South Miami comes later, for the surgery itself, after your plan and testing are set.

What will a gastric sleeve cost me as a self-pay patient from Boston?

The gastric sleeve package is $14,000 and covers the hospital stay, surgeon's fee, hospital fees and first-year follow-up. Cherry financing is available, and pricing for other procedures is reviewed at your consultation.

What disqualifies you for bariatric surgery?

Usually no single factor rules you out. Dr. K looks at your health history, the medications you take, your medical clearances and your readiness for the eating changes after surgery. When surgery is not the best first step, medical weight loss or an endoscopic procedure can come first.

Can I do my pre-surgery tests in Boston, MA?

You can. The required medical clearances and upper endoscopy can be completed with us or at an outside facility closer to home. Our team lets you know which tests you need and goes over the results with Dr. K.

How long does it take to lose 50 pounds after weight loss surgery?

Results vary with your starting weight, your procedure and how closely you stick to the post-surgery diet. Weight usually comes off fastest in the first months after surgery. At your consultation, Dr. K gives you a realistic estimate for your procedure.

Can I keep taking my GLP-1 injection before surgery?

Stop them at least two weeks before surgery. Dr. K can also help you decide whether medication, surgery or both suits your goals.
