The Procedure

How the Sleeve Changes Your Stomach

A gastric sleeve, or sleeve gastrectomy, removes about 75 to 80 percent of the stomach and shapes what remains into a narrow tube about the size of a banana.

Dr. K performs the operation laparoscopically, through a few small incisions, guided by a camera on a high-definition monitor. He trained specifically for this work with a fellowship in laparoscopic, bariatric and robotic surgery at Jackson South Medical Center.

Nothing is rerouted. Food follows its normal path through the digestive tract, which is the main difference between the sleeve and gastric bypass. Every sleeve starts with an upper endoscopy so Dr. K can examine your stomach and esophagus before surgery.

  1. Smaller Capacity

The new stomach holds a fraction of what it did, so portions shrink without the constant fight against an empty feeling.

  2. Quieter Hunger

The removed section produces much of the body's hunger hormone, and many patients notice their appetite drops soon after surgery.

  3. Earlier Fullness

A few bites of protein bring a sense of fullness, which makes the eating habits taught after surgery easier to keep.

Candidates

Who the Gastric Sleeve Fits

The sleeve is designed for adults whose weight is affecting their health and who have not kept weight off with diet, exercise or medication alone. Dr. K decides candidacy one patient at a time.

  • Years of dieting that brought weight back each time it came off
  • Weight-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea or joint pain
  • Patients on GLP-1 injections who want a one-time surgical option
  • Readiness for lifelong changes in portion size, protein and follow-up care
Compare Your Options

Gastric Sleeve vs. GLP-1 Medication vs. ESG

Most patients who ask about the sleeve have already tried, or considered, weight loss injections. Because Dr. K prescribes GLP-1 medication, performs ESG and operates, he can lay the three side by side and help you choose, or combine them.

Questions

FAQ About Gastric Sleeve in West Palm Beach, FL

Do I need to travel to Miami for gastric sleeve surgery from West Palm Beach, FL?

Your consultation, surgery and follow-up visits are with Dr. K at our office in South Miami and his hospital. Much of the preparation does not require the drive: the required tests can be done at our clinic or at an outside facility closer to home. Plan your trips around three milestones: the consultation, surgery day and your early check-ups.

Can my endoscopy be done before I meet Dr. K?

Yes. An upper endoscopy (EGD) is required before the sleeve, and one performed within the last five months is accepted. If Dr. K performs the EGD, the procedure itself is included in your surgery cost and a $750 hospital fee applies.

How quickly can I get a surgery date?

Scheduling speed depends mainly on how fast your medical clearances and tests are completed. When you use our recommended doctor for your analyses, results come back within 48 hours, which keeps the timeline short.

Is there a sleeve option if my BMI is lower?

Dr. K offers a low BMI Mini Sleeve for patients who carry excess weight but fall below the usual range for a standard sleeve. He reviews your history at the consultation and tells you which version, if any, fits.

What will I eat before and after the gastric sleeve?

A pre-surgery diet is required, and after surgery you move through stages from liquids back to small portions of solid food. Your weight loss plan is personalized by our weight loss specialists, and our diet plans are published on our website so you can read ahead.

Will Dr. K still follow me after the first year?

Follow-up visits for the first year are part of the surgery package. Many of our patients stay in his care well beyond that, and medical weight loss support is available if you want help keeping momentum.
