How it works

How the ORBERA Gastric Balloon Works

The ORBERA gastric balloon is a soft silicone balloon that Dr. K guides into the stomach through the mouth with an endoscope. Once it is in place, he fills it with saline until it is roughly the size of a grapefruit.

The balloon takes up room, so you feel full on smaller portions and stay full longer. Over six months the work shifts from the device to you: new portion sizes, new meal timing and habits that last. Then Dr. K removes it the same way it went in.

Why a surgeon places it here. Dr. K also performs ESG and bariatric surgery, so he offers the balloon when it is the right tool for you, not because it is the only one on the shelf.

Who the Gastric Balloon Is Right For

The balloon suits adults who need real help beyond diet and exercise but are not ready for, or do not want, a permanent change to the stomach.

The balloon is often a good fit when

  • You have tried structured diets, apps or programs and the weight keeps coming back.
  • You want a temporary, reversible option with no incisions.
  • You are not ready for bariatric surgery, or it is not the right step yet.
  • Weight is starting to affect your blood pressure, blood sugar or sleep, and you want to act early.
  • You are ready to follow a six-month nutrition and activity plan with our team.

Another option may suit you better when

  • You have had stomach surgery before. Dr. K will walk you through endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty or surgical options instead.
  • You have a lot of weight to lose and want the most durable result. A gastric sleeve may serve you better.
  • You have less to lose but want a lasting change. Our low-BMI Mini Sleeve was designed for that.
  • You prefer to start with medication. Weight loss injections are part of our medical weight loss program.

Gastric Balloon vs. ESG, Sleeve and Medication

Dr. K performs every option in this table. The recommendation you leave with is about your body and your goals, not about the one procedure a clinic happens to offer.

Keeping the Weight Off After Removal

The balloon is a six-month tool. What you keep afterward depends on the routines you build while it is in place, so the program is designed around that handoff.

  • Meals planned ahead. Protein-forward portions you prepare in advance, so smaller meals become the default.
  • A plan written for you. Our weight loss specialists personalize your plan and adjust it as your weight changes.
  • Medication when it helps. Medical weight loss, including weight loss injections, can carry momentum past month six.
  • A next step if you want more. ESG or a low-BMI Mini Sleeve can follow a balloon program, with the same surgeon.

Questions

Gastric Balloon FAQ for West Palm Beach, FL

How much weight will I lose with a gastric balloon?

It depends on your starting weight, your history and how closely you follow the nutrition and activity plan during the six months. The balloon makes smaller portions easier, and the habits you build decide how much you lose and keep. Dr. K gives you a realistic goal at your consultation rather than a headline number.

Is a gastric balloon safe?

ORBERA is placed and removed endoscopically through the mouth, with no incisions, and you go home the same day. Dr. K reviews your medical history before recommending it and explains what the first days feel like so nothing catches you off guard. Our team stays in touch by text through the adjustment period, and Dr. K can be reached on his own cell phone.

How long does the balloon stay in, and how is it removed?

ORBERA stays in place for six months. Removal is another short endoscopic procedure under sedation: Dr. K deflates the balloon and takes it out through the mouth. You go home the same day with a plan for the months that follow.

Do I have to travel from West Palm Beach, FL for every visit?

Your consultation, placement and removal are with Dr. K in the Miami area, and our office is in South Miami, a straight drive down I-95. Between those visits our team keeps in touch by text, so you are not driving down for every question.

What if I want more weight loss after the balloon?

Removal is a starting point, not a finish line. Some patients continue with medical weight loss, and others move on to ESG or a low-BMI Mini Sleeve once they know what they want. Because Dr. K performs all of these, your next step stays with the same surgeon.

Can I get a gastric balloon if I have had stomach surgery?

Usually not, because prior stomach surgery generally rules the balloon out. Dr. K will review what was done and walk you through the options that do fit, such as ESG or a surgical procedure.
