Candidacy

Who Is a Good Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery

Your weight is only part of the picture. Dr. K considers how your weight has changed over time, any related health conditions, the approaches you have tried and how ready you are for new eating habits after surgery.

  • You have struggled to keep weight off through diet, exercise or medication.
  • Your weight is linked to conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea or joint pain.
  • You are ready to follow a pre-surgery diet and to change how you eat for the long term.
  • You can complete medical clearances and an upper endoscopy before surgery.
  • You use a GLP-1 injection and want to know whether medication, surgery or both makes sense.

For some patients, another step makes sense first, like bringing a health condition under control. That may mean an endoscopic procedure or medical weight loss.

Why the right answer is sometimes GLP-1 medication, sometimes surgery and sometimes both.

Questions

FAQ About Bariatric Surgery in Southwest Ranches, FL

Can I visit the office or start with a video consult?

Either works. You can come to our South Miami office, about half an hour away, or meet Dr. K by video from home. Surgery and follow-ups take place close by once your plan and testing are ready.

How much does bariatric surgery cost in Florida?

Our gastric sleeve package is $14,000, including the hospital stay and first-year follow-up, and Cherry financing is available. Pricing for other procedures is reviewed at your consultation.

What disqualifies you for bariatric surgery?

One single factor rarely rules you out. Dr. K looks at your health history, the medications you take, your medical clearances and how ready you are for new eating habits after surgery. If surgery should wait, an endoscopic procedure or medical weight loss may come first.

Can I do my pre-surgery tests near Southwest Ranches?

Yes. You can complete the required medical clearances and upper endoscopy with us or at an outside facility closer to home. Our team explains which tests you need and reviews the results with Dr. K.

How long does it take to lose 50 pounds after weight loss surgery?

That varies with your starting weight, your procedure and how well you stick to the post-surgery diet. Most weight loss tends to happen in the first months. At your consultation, Dr. K gives you a realistic estimate for your procedure.

Can I keep taking my GLP-1 injection before surgery?

You need to stop them at least two weeks before your operation. Dr. K can also help you decide if medication, surgery or a mix of both suits your goals.
