The Basics

How Bariatric Surgery in Miami Beach, FL Works

Bariatric surgery makes the stomach smaller or reroutes digestion, so you feel full on far less food. It also changes the gut hormones that drive hunger. That is why it works for patients whose weight came back after diets and medications.

Dr. Keshavarzi performs these operations laparoscopically, through small incisions guided by a camera. Miami Beach patients see him at our South Miami office for the consultation and every follow-up visit.

What to Expect

Our Bariatric Surgery Process

  1. Consultation With Dr. K

You review your health and weight history together and leave knowing which procedure fits and what it costs.

  2. Pre-Op Testing

Medical clearances and an upper endoscopy are required. You can complete them with us or at an outside facility, and a recent endoscopy may already count.

  3. Pre-Surgery Diet

A pre-surgery diet prepares your body for the operation. If you use weight loss injections, you stop them at least two weeks before surgery.

  4. Surgery Day

Dr. K performs your procedure laparoscopically. How soon you get a date depends on how quickly your testing is finished.

  5. Recovery and the First Year

Most patients return to work 4 to 7 days after surgery and avoid lifting more than 20 pounds while they heal. Follow-up visits continue through your first year.

Questions

FAQ About Bariatric Surgery in Miami Beach, FL

How do I get approved for bariatric surgery?

Approval starts with a consultation where Dr. K reviews your weight history, past attempts to lose weight and any weight-related conditions. If surgery fits, you complete medical clearances, an upper endoscopy and a pre-surgery diet. Insurance plans that cover surgery often add their own documentation steps, and we walk you through what applies to you.

Does UnitedHealthcare pay for bariatric surgery?

Some UnitedHealthcare plans cover bariatric surgery and others exclude it, depending on the plan your employer chose. Call the number on your member card and ask whether your plan includes weight loss surgery. Our gastric sleeve package and Cherry financing are an option whatever your coverage.

How does gastric bypass work?

Gastric bypass creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach and connects it directly to a lower part of the small intestine. Food skips most of the stomach and the first section of the intestine, so you eat less and absorb fewer calories. It also changes the gut hormones that control hunger and blood sugar.

How much weight will I lose 3 months after a gastric sleeve?

It depends on your starting weight, how closely you follow the post-op diet and how active you are. Weight usually comes off fastest in the first months and continues through the first year. Your follow-up visits track your progress against a plan set for you.

Will I need to change how I eat after surgery?

Yes. You move in stages from liquids to soft foods and then to small, protein-first meals. Our team explains each stage at your visits, and our diet plans are on our website.
