The Procedure

What Is Bariatric Surgery in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL?

Bariatric surgery reduces the size of your stomach. Some procedures also reroute part of the digestive tract. The result is that smaller portions fill you up and hunger signals ease. Dr. K uses minimally invasive techniques, working through small incisions.

If you live in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, your surgery takes place with us in South Miami. It is about 47 miles, a drive of just under an hour without traffic via FL-836 W. You make the trip for one surgeon who follows your case from your first conversation to your last follow-up visit.

Candidacy

Who Is a Good Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery

Your weight alone does not decide whether you qualify. Dr. K reviews your weight history, any health conditions linked to your weight and the approaches you have tried before. He also considers how ready you are for the new way of eating after surgery.

  • You have struggled to keep weight off through diet, exercise or medication.
  • Your weight is linked to conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea or joint pain.
  • You are ready to follow a pre-surgery diet and to change how you eat for the long term.
  • You can complete medical clearances and an upper endoscopy before surgery.
  • You use a GLP-1 injection and want to know whether medication, surgery or both makes sense.

For some patients, surgery is not the first move. You may need to bring a medical condition under control first. An endoscopic procedure or medical weight loss can come before surgery.

Why the right answer is sometimes GLP-1 medication, sometimes surgery and sometimes both.

Questions

FAQ About Bariatric Surgery in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL

Do I need to drive down from Lauderdale-by-the-Sea to consult?

No. Consultations can be virtual, so you can meet Dr. K from home. The trip to South Miami comes later, for the surgery itself, after your plan is set and your testing is complete.

How much does bariatric surgery cost in Florida?

Our gastric sleeve package is $14,000, including the hospital stay and first-year follow-up, and Cherry financing is available. Pricing for other procedures is reviewed at your consultation.

What disqualifies you for bariatric surgery?

One factor rarely rules you out on its own. Dr. K looks at your health history, the medications you take, your medical clearances and how ready you are for new eating habits after surgery. If surgery should not come first, you can start with an endoscopic procedure or medical weight loss.

Can I do my pre-surgery tests near Lauderdale-by-the-Sea?

Yes. You can get the required medical clearances and upper endoscopy with us or at an outside facility closer to home. Our team lets you know which tests you need and goes over the results with Dr. K.

How long does it take to lose 50 pounds after weight loss surgery?

That depends on where you start, which procedure you have and how well you stick to the diet after surgery. Most weight tends to come off quickest in the early months. At your consultation, Dr. K gives you an honest estimate for your procedure.

Can I keep taking my GLP-1 injection before surgery?

You need to stop them at least two weeks before your operation. Dr. K can also help you decide if medication, surgery or a mix of both suits your goals.
