Candidacy

Who Is a Good Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery

Being a candidate is about more than your weight today. Dr. K considers your weight over time, the health conditions linked to it, the approaches you have already tried and how ready you are for the new way of eating after surgery.

  • You have struggled to keep weight off through diet, exercise or medication.
  • Your weight is linked to conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea or joint pain.
  • You are ready to follow a pre-surgery diet and to change how you eat for the long term.
  • You can complete medical clearances and an upper endoscopy before surgery.
  • You use a GLP-1 injection and want to know whether medication, surgery or both makes sense.

For some people, surgery is not the right place to start. A health condition may need attention first, so an endoscopic procedure or medical weight loss can come before surgery.

Why the right answer is sometimes GLP-1 medication, sometimes surgery and sometimes both.

Questions

FAQ About Bariatric Surgery in Golden Beach, FL

Should I visit the office or do my first consult by video?

Either works. You can come to our South Miami office, under an hour from Golden Beach, or meet Dr. K through a virtual consultation from home. Surgery takes place with us once your plan and testing are ready.

How much does bariatric surgery cost in Florida?

Our gastric sleeve package is $14,000, including the hospital stay and first-year follow-up, and Cherry financing is available. Pricing for other procedures is reviewed at your consultation.

What disqualifies you for bariatric surgery?

Usually no single factor rules you out. Dr. K looks at your medical history, the medications you take now, your medical clearances and how prepared you are for eating differently after surgery. When surgery is not the best place to begin, an endoscopic procedure or medical weight loss can come first.

Can I do pre-surgery testing near Golden Beach?

Yes. Your medical clearances and upper endoscopy can be completed with us or at an outside facility closer to home. We let you know which tests you need, and our team goes over the results with Dr. K.

How long does it take to lose 50 pounds after weight loss surgery?

The answer varies with your starting weight, your procedure and how carefully you follow the diet after surgery. Weight tends to come off fastest in the early months. At your consultation, Dr. K gives you a realistic estimate for your procedure.

Can I keep taking my GLP-1 injection before surgery?

You need to stop them at least two weeks before your operation. Dr. K can also help you decide whether medication, surgery or both suits your goals.
