Rapid-fire questions about bariatric surgery, answered by Dr. K.

How It Works

How Bariatric Surgery Works for Glades County, FL Patients

Bariatric surgery changes the size or function of the stomach so you feel full on far smaller portions. The gastric sleeve, the procedure Dr. K specializes in, is performed laparoscopically and leaves a narrow sleeve-shaped stomach. Smaller meals and less hunger make steady weight loss possible when paired with the nutrition plan our team builds for you.

For patients in Moore Haven, Lakeport, Buckhead Ridge, Palmdale and the rest of Glades County, care is centered at our South Miami office. We plan around that distance. Your first conversation with Dr. K can be virtual, required tests can be done at a facility closer to home, and Dr. K contacts patients from his own cell phone once they are back home.

Who Bariatric Surgery Can Help

Weight loss surgery is a medical decision built on your full health history, not one number on a scale. Bariatric surgery is worth discussing with Dr. K if any of these describe you.

  • You have tried diets, exercise programs or medication without lasting results.
  • You live with weight-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea or joint pain.
  • You carry less excess weight but still struggle, and a smaller-scale option such as the low BMI Mini Sleeve may fit.
  • You are the parent of a teen ages 14 to 17 whose weight affects their health.
  • You use weight loss injections and want to talk about a longer-term surgical plan.
  • You are ready to follow a pre-surgery diet and stay in regular follow-up through your first year.
Your Options

Weight Loss Procedures Dr. K Performs

We offer surgical and nonsurgical options under one roof, and Dr. K recommends one only after reviewing your health, your history and your goals.

Gastric Sleeve

Our core procedure. A laparoscopic operation that reduces the stomach to a slim sleeve to limit portion size and hunger. An expedited gastric sleeve path is available for patients who complete their pre-surgery testing quickly.

Low BMI Mini Sleeve

A sleeve option for patients with a lower BMI who still struggle with their weight and related health concerns.

Teen Gastric Sleeve

A gastric sleeve program for adolescents ages 14 to 17, planned together with the family.

Gastric Bypass

Creates a small stomach pouch and reroutes part of the small intestine to change how food is absorbed.

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty

ESG uses internal sutures placed through the mouth to reduce stomach volume, with no external incisions.

ORBERA Gastric Balloon

A temporary balloon placed in the stomach endoscopically to help you feel full sooner.

Medical Weight Loss

Personalized plans created by our weight loss specialists, including weight loss injections when they suit you.

What to Expect

Your Path From Consultation to Surgery Day

Each step is planned so you spend as little time on the road as possible.

  1. Consultation

Dr. K conducts every consultation himself. He reviews your health history and past weight loss attempts, recommends the procedure that fits, and you leave knowing your plan and its cost.

  2. Clearances and EGD

Surgery requires medical clearances and an upper endoscopy, or EGD. You can complete them at a facility near home or with us, and Dr. K can perform the EGD himself.

  3. Preparation

You follow a pre-surgery diet, and our team supports you throughout the preparation process. Dr. K adjusts any weight loss medication you use ahead of your date.

  4. Surgery

Once your tests are complete, surgery dates are often available within the current month. Your hospital stay is part of the gastric sleeve package.

  5. Recovery

Most patients return to work 4 to 7 days after the procedure. Avoid lifting more than 20 pounds while you heal.

  6. First-Year Follow-Up

Follow-up appointments for the first year are included in the gastric sleeve package, and our staff guides you through each stage of your post-surgery diet.

Questions

FAQ About Bariatric Surgery in Glades County, FL

Answers to what patients outside Miami ask us most often.

Do Glades County patients need to travel to South Miami for every visit?

No. Your first consultation can be virtual, and the required medical clearances and EGD can be completed at a facility closer to home. You come to South Miami for surgery and for the in-person checks Dr. K needs during your recovery.

How quickly can I schedule bariatric surgery?

Surgery dates are often available within the current month. Your real timeline depends on how fast you complete your medical clearances and EGD. Our recommended doctor returns test results within 48 hours, which shortens the wait for many patients.

Do I need an endoscopy before bariatric surgery?

Yes. An EGD is required before surgery, and one performed within the last five months is accepted. If Dr. K performs it, the procedure itself is included in your surgery cost and a $750 hospital fee applies.

Can I keep using weight loss injections before surgery?

Weight loss injections must be stopped at least two weeks before surgery. Tell Dr. K about every medication you use at your consultation so he can plan the timing with you.

Which weight loss procedure is right for me?

That depends on your weight, your health conditions, what you have already tried and your goals. Because Dr. K performs the gastric sleeve, the low BMI Mini Sleeve, gastric bypass, ESG and the ORBERA balloon and oversees medical weight loss, his recommendation is not limited to one procedure.

Does Dr. K stay in touch after I go home to Glades County?

Yes. Dr. K contacts patients from his own cell phone, and our team answers questions by text after your visits. Many reviews mention reaching him by phone or text during recovery.
