How It Works

How Bariatric Surgery Works

Bariatric surgery makes the stomach smaller, and some procedures also reroute digestion, so you feel full sooner and hunger quiets down.

Dr. Keshavarzi performs these procedures laparoscopically through small incisions, or endoscopically through the mouth with no incisions. Most gastric sleeve patients return to work within 4 to 7 days, which keeps your time away from Fort Myers short.

Surgery is one tool among several. Dr. K also oversees medical weight loss with GLP-1 medications, so your plan can use medication, a procedure or both, whichever fits your health and goals.

Who Is a Good Fit for Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery suits people whose weight is affecting their health or daily life and who have not kept weight off with diet, exercise or medication alone.

The number on the scale is only part of the picture. Dr. K looks at your medical history, current medications and goals, then tells you plainly which options fit and which do not.

  • Diets and programs work for a while, then the weight returns.
  • You manage type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, reflux or joint pain.
  • GLP-1 injections helped, but you cannot stay on them or want a longer-lasting result.
  • You have less to lose and want a low BMI sleeve, ESG or balloon.
  • You are ready to follow a nutrition plan and keep your follow-up visits.

Questions

FAQ About Bariatric Surgery in Fort Myers, FL

Do I need to travel to Miami for every appointment?

No. Your first consultation can be virtual, and your medical clearances and endoscopy can be done at a facility near you in Fort Myers. You come to our South Miami office for surgery and your follow-up visits. Between visits, Dr. K stays reachable by phone and text.

Can I get my pre-op endoscopy in Fort Myers?

Yes. An upper endoscopy, or EGD, is required before surgery, and one done elsewhere within the last 5 months is accepted. If you would rather have Dr. Keshavarzi perform it, the procedure is included in your surgery cost and only a $750 hospital fee applies.

Which is better, Ozempic or bariatric surgery?

It depends on your health, your goals and how much weight you want to lose. Dr. K prescribes GLP-1 medications and performs bariatric surgery, so he can recommend either one or a combination. If you choose surgery, injections must stop at least 2 weeks before your procedure.

Is bariatric surgery painful?

Most of the procedures we perform are minimally invasive, done through small incisions or endoscopically with no incisions at all. Many gastric sleeve patients return to work within 4 to 7 days. Dr. K goes over what recovery will feel like for your procedure before surgery day.

Does insurance pay for bariatric surgery?

Coverage depends on your plan, so ask our team about yours when you reach out. We also publish a gastric sleeve package price of $14,000 for patients paying on their own. Financing through Cherry includes 24 months at 0% interest.

How soon can I return to work and normal activity?

Most gastric sleeve patients return to work 4 to 7 days after surgery. Avoid lifting anything over 20 pounds while you heal. Your diet advances in stages, and your first-year follow-up visits are included in the sleeve package.

Medication, surgery or both: why the right combination depends on you.
