The Procedure

What Is Bariatric Surgery in Coconut Grove, FL?

With bariatric surgery, your stomach becomes smaller. Some procedures also reroute part of the digestive tract. Smaller portions then fill you up, and hunger signals ease. Dr. K uses minimally invasive techniques and works through small incisions.

If you live in Coconut Grove, your surgery happens with us in South Miami. The office is about 5 miles away, roughly 15 minutes down US-1 without traffic. You get one surgeon who knows your case from the first conversation to the last follow-up visit.

Weight Loss Procedures Dr. K Performs

There is no single bariatric operation. It is a group of procedures, and Dr. K offers surgical, endoscopic and nonsurgical options. That way, the advice you get is shaped by your health, not by one technique.

Candidacy

Who Is a Good Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery

Your weight alone does not decide whether surgery is right for you. Dr. K reviews your weight history, any health conditions linked to your weight, the approaches you have already tried and how ready you are for the eating changes after surgery.

  • You have struggled to keep weight off through diet, exercise or medication.
  • Your weight is linked to conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea or joint pain.
  • You are ready to follow a pre-surgery diet and to change how you eat for the long term.
  • You can complete medical clearances and an upper endoscopy before surgery.
  • You use a GLP-1 injection and want to know whether medication, surgery or both makes sense.

For some patients, the first step looks different, such as bringing a medical condition under control. In that case, an endoscopic procedure or medical weight loss can come first.

Why the right answer is sometimes GLP-1 medication, sometimes surgery and sometimes both.

Patients call Dr. Keshavarzi by a shorter name, Dr. K. He is a board-certified bariatric surgeon and the lead surgeon at Miami VIP Surgery. He performs the surgical and endoscopic procedures above and oversees our medical weight loss program.

He earned his medical degree with High Distinction from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine after graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Louisville. Many patients talk about how easy he is to reach. Several reviews mention Dr. K giving out his own cell number and checking in after they got home. For Coconut Grove patients, that attention comes with an office only about 15 minutes away.

Dr. K practices the habits he coaches: staying active, eating well and keeping weight off.

Questions

FAQ About Bariatric Surgery in Coconut Grove, FL

Can I visit the office for my consult, or do it by video?

Either works. You can meet Dr. K in person at our South Miami office, about 15 minutes from Coconut Grove via US-1, or start with a virtual consultation from home. Surgery happens with us in South Miami once your plan and testing are in place.

How much does bariatric surgery cost in Florida?

Our gastric sleeve package is $14,000, including the hospital stay and first-year follow-up, and Cherry financing is available. Pricing for other procedures is reviewed at your consultation.

What disqualifies you for bariatric surgery?

Usually no one factor rules you out. Dr. K looks at your health history, the medications you take now, your medical clearances and how prepared you are for the eating changes after surgery. When surgery is not the best place to start, an endoscopic procedure or medical weight loss can come first.

Can I do my pre-surgery tests near Coconut Grove?

Yes. You can complete the required medical clearances and upper endoscopy with us or at an outside facility closer to home. Our team lets you know which tests you need and goes over the results with Dr. K.

How long does it take to lose 50 pounds after weight loss surgery?

That varies with your starting weight, your procedure and how well you stick to the post-surgery diet. Weight tends to come off fastest in the first months after surgery. At your consultation, Dr. K gives you a realistic estimate for your procedure.

Can I keep taking my GLP-1 injection before surgery?

You need to stop them at least two weeks before your operation. Dr. K can also help you decide whether medication, surgery or both suits your goals.
