Bariatric surgery changes the size or route of the stomach so you feel full on far less food, which also shifts the hunger hormones that make dieting so hard to sustain. Dr. K performs these procedures laparoscopically, through small incisions, or endoscopically, through the mouth with no incisions at all.
For patients in St. Cloud, the choice is rarely just "surgery or not." It is which tool fits your health, your goals and your history. Dr. K offers every option below, so the recommendation follows your body rather than a single procedure he happens to perform.
| Procedure | How it works | Approach | Often considered by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gastric sleeve | Removes most of the stomach, leaving a narrow sleeve that holds less food and makes less of the hunger hormone ghrelin. | Laparoscopic | Adults with obesity and related conditions who want a durable result. |
| Low BMI "Mini Sleeve" | A sleeve gastrectomy planned for patients whose BMI sits below the usual surgical range. | Laparoscopic | Patients with less weight to lose who have not reached their goal another way. |
| Gastric bypass | Creates a small stomach pouch and reroutes the small intestine, limiting both intake and absorption. | Laparoscopic | Patients with severe reflux or type 2 diabetes, or higher weight-loss goals. |
| Endoscopic sleeve (ESG) | Sutures placed from inside the stomach fold it into a smaller sleeve shape without removing tissue. | No incisions | Patients who want a step between medication and surgery. |
| ORBERA gastric balloon | A soft balloon placed in the stomach takes up space for a set period, then is removed. | No incisions | Patients looking for a temporary, nonsurgical start. |
| Medical weight loss | A physician-guided plan that can include weight loss injections, nutrition coaching and regular check-ins. | Nonsurgical | Patients not ready for a procedure, or pairing one with medication. |
Surgery is a medical decision made with your full health history in view. These are the patients Dr. K most often sees at a first consultation.
Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, reflux or joint pain that tracks with your weight.
You have lost weight before, more than once, and watched it return each time.
Weight loss injections helped at first but plateaued, or the cost of staying on them long term does not add up.
The low BMI "Mini Sleeve" is planned for patients whose BMI sits below the usual surgical range.
Our teen gastric sleeve is planned for adolescents, with parents involved at every step.
Many patients arrive unsure which option is right. Sorting that out is exactly what the consultation is for.
Rapid-fire questions with Dr. K
