How Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Works

Gastric bypass changes both how much you can eat and how your body handles food. Dr. Keshavarzi performs it with minimally invasive techniques through several small incisions.

1

A Small Stomach Pouch

The upper stomach is divided into a pouch about the size of an egg, so you feel full on much smaller portions.

2

A Rerouted Small Intestine

The pouch connects directly to a lower loop of small intestine. Food skips the rest of the stomach and the first stretch of intestine, which lowers the calories you absorb.

3

Shifts in Gut Hormones

The new route changes hormone signals tied to hunger, fullness and blood sugar. This is one reason bypass is often considered for patients with type 2 diabetes.

Unlike the gastric sleeve, no part of the stomach is removed.

Candidates

Who Gastric Bypass Is For

Dr. K decides candidacy one patient at a time, based on your health and goals. Bypass is most often recommended for:

  • Larger weight loss goalsAdults with significant weight to lose who have not reached their goal with diet, exercise or medication.
  • Weight-related health conditionsPatients living with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnea.
  • Heartburn and acid refluxPeople with frequent reflux, for whom bypass is often preferred over a sleeve.
  • Sleeve patients considering revisionThose with weight regain or reflux after a gastric sleeve who want to explore conversion to bypass.
  • Ready for long-term habitsPatients prepared for daily vitamins, follow-up visits and a new way of eating.

Gastric Bypass vs. Gastric Sleeve vs. GLP-1 Medication

Many Fort Lauderdale patients arrive weighing these three paths. We offer all of them, so the recommendation is about fit rather than one procedure.

Your Gastric Bypass Timeline, Step by Step

How quickly you reach surgery depends mostly on how fast your testing is completed.

  1. 1Consultation

Meet Dr. K in South Miami or start with a virtual consultation. He reviews your history and explains whether bypass or another option fits.

  2. 2Testing and clearances

Bypass requires medical clearances and an upper endoscopy, called an EGD. An EGD from the last five months is accepted, tests can be done at our office or elsewhere, and our recommended doctor returns results within 48 hours.

  3. 3Preparing for surgery

You follow a pre-surgery diet, and any GLP-1 injections stop at least two weeks before your date.

  4. 4Surgery day

Once your testing is complete, surgery is scheduled. Dates are often available within the same month.

  5. 5Recovery

Our surgical patients typically return to work 4 to 7 days after surgery. Lifting stays under 20 lbs while you heal, and your diet advances in stages.

  6. 6Follow-up

Follow-up visits and nutrition guidance continue, and Dr. K stays reachable by phone or text.

FAQ About Gastric Bypass in Fort Lauderdale, FL

Is Gastric Bypass or Ozempic Better for Weight Loss?

They do different jobs. GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic reduce appetite while you keep taking them, and gastric bypass changes the anatomy of the stomach and intestine. Dr. K often combines the two, using medication before or after surgery, and injections are paused at least two weeks before surgery.

What Should I Avoid After Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Avoid lifting more than 20 lbs during early healing, and do not skip ahead in your staged diet. Most patients also avoid drinking with meals, carbonated drinks and high-sugar foods, and take their vitamins every day.

How Much Does Gastric Bypass Cost in Fort Lauderdale, FL?

Your price is set after your consultation, once Dr. K confirms bypass is the right procedure for you. Financing through Cherry includes 24 months at 0% interest, with monthly payments as low as $320. Debit and credit cards are accepted for any remaining balance.

Do I Have to Travel to South Miami for Every Appointment?

No. You can begin with a virtual consultation, and required tests, including the EGD, can be done at a facility closer to Fort Lauderdale. Surgery is performed by Dr. K, and you can text our team with questions between visits.

Can a Gastric Sleeve Be Converted to Gastric Bypass?

Converting a sleeve to a bypass is a recognized revision for some patients with weight regain or reflux after a sleeve. If you had your sleeve elsewhere, Dr. K can review your history and a recent EGD and explain whether conversion makes sense for you.

How Soon Can I Return to Work After Gastric Bypass?

Our surgical patients typically return to work 4 to 7 days after surgery. Jobs that involve heavy lifting take longer, because lifting more than 20 lbs is off limits early in recovery.
