Dr. Reza Keshavarzi performs gastric bypass alongside the sleeve, ESG and gastric balloon, so Davie patients get a recommendation built on their health and one surgeon from the first visit through follow-up.
Gastric bypass shrinks the part of the stomach that receives food and changes the route that food takes. Dr. Keshavarzi performs the Roux-en-Y version, the most widely used form of the operation.
A small pouch is formed at the top of the stomach and joined directly to a lower loop of the small intestine. Meals now pass the larger part of the stomach and the first stretch of intestine, so you feel full on far less food and absorb fewer calories.
The operation is laparoscopic. It is done through a few small incisions with a camera and slim instruments, the approach Dr. K trained in during his fellowship in laparoscopic, bariatric and robotic surgery at Jackson South Medical Center.
Davie patients come to our South Miami office for the consultation, the visits before surgery and every follow-up. The operation itself takes place in the hospital, and you recover there before going home.
Nothing is removed. Unlike the sleeve, the bypassed stomach stays in your body and keeps producing digestive juices, which meet your food further down the intestine.
Dr. K meets every patient himself and reviews the full medical picture before recommending a procedure. Bypass tends to come up in these situations.
The hormone changes from rerouting make bypass a frequent topic when weight and blood sugar rise together.
The small pouch makes very little acid, so bypass is often favored over the sleeve for patients with significant heartburn.
Combining a smaller stomach with reduced absorption gives bypass two ways to work at once.
Sleep apnea, high blood pressure and joint strain are common reasons patients begin the conversation.
Diets, exercise programs or medication worked for a while, then the pounds came back.
You want a longer-term plan than weekly GLP-1 shots and would like to map out the switch with a surgeon.
Bypass is one of several options. Dr. K also performs the gastric sleeve, a low BMI Mini Sleeve for a BMI of 25 to 30, a teen sleeve program for ages 14 to 17, ESG and the ORBERA balloon, and he oversees medical weight loss. If another route suits you better, that is what your consultation will cover.
Book a ConsultationThese are the two operations Davie patients ask about most. Dr. Keshavarzi performs both, so the comparison you hear is a real choice rather than a sales pitch.
| Gastric Bypass | Gastric Sleeve | |
|---|---|---|
| Technique | Laparoscopic, through small incisions | Laparoscopic, through small incisions |
| Stomach | A small pouch is created and the rest stays in place | Most of the stomach is removed, leaving a narrow tube |
| Intestine | Rerouted to the new pouch | Unchanged |
| How it works | Smaller portions plus fewer calories absorbed | Smaller portions and lower hunger |
| Often chosen when | Reflux or type 2 diabetes is part of the picture | A simpler change without rerouting is preferred |
| Supplements | Lifelong, including B12, iron and calcium | Lifelong, usually a lighter routine |
Two nonsurgical routes round out the choice. Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty narrows the stomach from the inside with stitches and no incisions, and the ORBERA balloon fills space in the stomach for a set period before removal.
The right treatment, or the right combination, for each patient: GLP-1 medication, surgery, nutrition and follow-up.
MD, FACS, FASMBS. Board-certified bariatric surgeon
Dr. Keshavarzi, known to patients as Dr. K, is our lead surgeon and brings decades of experience in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery. Gastric bypass is one of six procedures he performs, which means he can weigh it honestly against the others for your health.
Patients notice how involved he stays. He reaches out from his own cell phone while you recover and keeps seeing you as the weight comes off.

Our team supports you through every stage of preparation. How fast you reach surgery depends mainly on how quickly your required testing is finished.
Dr. K goes over your weight history, medications, reflux, blood sugar and goals. You leave knowing whether bypass fits, what preparation involves and what your quote is.
Clearances and an upper endoscopy, called an EGD, are required. Testing can be done at our clinic or an outside facility, Dr. Keshavarzi can perform the EGD himself, and an EGD from the last 5 months is accepted.
A pre-surgery diet prepares your body for the operation. If you take a weight loss injection, it is stopped at least 2 weeks before your date.
Dr. K forms the pouch and reroutes the intestine through small incisions, and you recover in the hospital before heading home.
Many patients are back at work within 4 to 7 days. Lifting more than 20 lbs is off limits in early recovery.
You progress through staged diet plans, start daily supplements and keep seeing Dr. K as your weight changes.
Rapid-fire questions about surgery, answered by Dr. K.
Your bypass quote depends on your health and the testing you still need, so Dr. K gives you an exact figure at your consultation, before you commit to anything.

Cherry is accepted for surgery, and our team explains every financing option during your consultation.

Our office is at 7330 SW 62nd Pl, Suite 210, in South Miami. Davie patients come to this one office for their consultation, testing visits and follow-up care. You see the same surgeon, Dr. Keshavarzi, at every appointment.
That depends on your health and your goals, which is why Dr. K reviews your full history before recommending anything. Bypass is often weighed when type 2 diabetes or ongoing acid reflux is part of the picture. Because he performs every procedure we offer, you hear an honest comparison rather than a pitch for one operation.
Coverage and approval timelines for bariatric surgery differ from one insurer and plan to the next. Our team goes over how you can pay during your consultation. Financing through Cherry is available for patients who pay directly.
Your date depends on how quickly your medical clearances and endoscopy are completed. An endoscopy done within the last 5 months is accepted, which can save a step. Surgery dates are often available within the same month once testing is done.
Yes. Many patients move from weekly injections to surgery for a longer-term plan. Injections must be stopped at least 2 weeks before your surgery date, and Dr. K sets that timing with you.
Many patients return to work 4 to 7 days after the procedure. Lifting anything over 20 lbs stays off limits early in recovery. Dr. K confirms a timeline that fits your job.
Yes. Because food skips part of the small intestine, bypass patients take vitamin and mineral supplements for life, usually including B12, iron and calcium. Your supplement plan is reviewed at follow-up visits.
Compare bypass with every procedure Dr. K performs and leave with a plan, a quote and a realistic timeline.
