One surgeon from start to finish: Dr. Reza Keshavarzi meets you at consultation, performs your bypass and keeps seeing you in our South Miami office long after surgery.

Gastric bypass limits how much you can eat and changes how your body handles the food you do eat.
A small pouch is formed from the upper stomach and joined to a lower section of the small intestine. Meals travel past most of the stomach and the first stretch of intestine, so small portions fill you up and fewer calories are absorbed.
Nothing is removed: the bypassed stomach stays in place and keeps making digestive juices. Dr. Keshavarzi operates through a few small incisions, the approach he focused on during his surgical fellowship.
Patients from across Miami see us for every appointment at our South Miami office.
Dr. K weighs your history, conditions and goals at consultation. These are the situations where bypass most often comes up.
Bypass affects the hormones that manage glucose, so it is often weighed for type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.
The new pouch makes little acid, so bypass is frequently chosen when reflux is a daily problem.
Sleep apnea, high blood pressure and sore knees or hips often start the conversation.
You have lost weight before with meal plans or exercise, and it returned each time.
GLP-1 medication helped, and you want a result that does not depend on refills.
You can commit to smaller meals, daily supplements and regular check-ins with our team.
Bypass may not be your answer, and that is fine. Dr. Keshavarzi also performs the gastric sleeve, the low BMI Mini Sleeve, a teen sleeve for ages 14 to 17, ESG and the ORBERA balloon, and he oversees medical weight loss.
Book a ConsultationDr. K performs all three, so you can compare the surgical and endoscopic routes with one surgeon and decide together.
| Gastric Bypass | Gastric Sleeve | ESG | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approach | Small abdominal incisions | Small abdominal incisions | No incisions, done through the mouth with an endoscope |
| Stomach | Divided into a small pouch, the rest stays in place | Most of it is removed, leaving a narrow tube | Folded and stitched from the inside to reduce its size |
| Intestine | Rerouted | Unchanged | Unchanged |
| Commonly chosen for | Reflux, type 2 diabetes, more weight to lose | Patients who prefer a simpler anatomy | Patients who want a nonsurgical route |
| Supplements | Daily for life, often B12, iron and calcium | Daily for life, usually a lighter routine | Guided by your follow-up plan |
The ORBERA balloon is a fourth route. It sits in the stomach for a set period and is then removed, often paired with medical weight loss.
MD, FACS, FASMBS. Board-certified bariatric surgeon
Dr. K is our lead surgeon, with decades in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery. He trained in surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital and completed a fellowship in laparoscopic, bariatric and robotic surgery at Jackson South Medical Center, both in Miami.
He runs every consultation himself and gives patients a direct line to him during recovery. Because he performs every major weight loss procedure, his advice on bypass is based on your health alone.
Our team stays with you through every part of preparation. How fast you reach surgery depends mostly on how quickly your tests are finished.
Dr. K goes through your weight history, medications, reflux and blood sugar, then explains whether bypass or another procedure fits. You leave with a clear plan and your next steps.
You complete medical clearances and an EGD. Tests can be done at our clinic or elsewhere, results from our recommended doctor arrive within 48 hours, and an EGD from the last 5 months is accepted.
A required pre-surgery diet gets your body ready. If you use weight loss injections, you stop them at least 2 weeks before your date.
After your hospital recovery, most patients return to work within 4 to 7 days. Lifting over 20 lbs is off the table while you heal.
You progress from liquids to soft foods to regular meals with our diet plans and begin daily supplements. Dr. K continues to see you as the weight comes off.
Dr. K gives you an exact bypass quote at your consultation, before you commit to a date.

Approval starts with a consultation with Dr. Keshavarzi, who reviews your weight history, health conditions and past attempts to decide whether bypass is the right operation. You then complete medical clearances and an upper endoscopy, known as an EGD, followed by a pre-surgery diet. Once those steps are done, our team confirms your surgery date.
Your price depends on your health and on which pre-surgery tests you still need, so Dr. K gives you an exact quote at your consultation. If he performs your EGD, the endoscopy itself is included in your procedure cost and only a $750 hospital fee applies. Financing through Cherry offers 24 months at 0% interest, with monthly payments from $320.
It depends on your starting weight, your health and how closely you follow the post-op diet and activity plan. Weight loss is usually fastest in the first months after surgery and continues more gradually over the following year or longer. Dr. K sets realistic milestones for you at follow-up rather than promising a fixed number.
Fruit such as blueberries usually returns once you reach the later stages of the post-op diet, in small portions and after your protein. In the first weeks you move from liquids to purees to soft foods, so whole fruit waits. Our diet plans spell out each stage, and our team tells you when you are ready to add new foods.
Surgery dates are often available within the current month. The real pace setter is your testing: results from our recommended doctor come back within 48 hours, and an EGD done within the last 5 months is accepted. Patients who finish their tests quickly are scheduled sooner.
Yes. Many patients use weight loss injections first and then choose surgery for a longer-term result. Injections need to be stopped at least 2 weeks before your operation, and Dr. K plans that handover with you.
Talk through bypass and every alternative with the surgeon who would perform it, and leave knowing your quote, your testing and your timeline.
