How the Sleeve Works

What Is Gastric Sleeve in Hialeah, FL

A gastric sleeve, or sleeve gastrectomy, reshapes the stomach into a slim tube. Dr. Keshavarzi removes the large, stretchy outer curve of the stomach, roughly three quarters of it, and seals the rest into a narrow sleeve.

He operates laparoscopically, through a few small incisions, guiding the instruments while he watches a camera view on a monitor. That approach is the focus of his fellowship training in laparoscopic, bariatric and robotic surgery.

  • 1

    Full on Less Food

The sleeve holds a fraction of what your stomach held before, so small meals satisfy you.

  • 2

    Quieter Hunger

The removed section makes most of ghrelin, a hunger hormone, so many patients notice fewer cravings.

  • 3

    The Same Digestive Path

Food still passes through the stomach outlet and the full intestine. Nothing is rerouted.

Candidacy

Signs a Gastric Sleeve Fits Your Goals

The sleeve is built for adults carrying significant excess weight who want a permanent change in how much they can eat. Dr. K weighs your full health history before he recommends it.

  • Diets, programs or medication have helped for a while, then the weight returned.
  • Your weight is tied to health problems such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea or sore joints.
  • You want a lasting tool rather than a temporary device or a medication you must keep taking.
  • You are ready for a pre-surgery diet now and smaller, protein-first meals for life.
  • Your medical clearances show you are healthy enough for anesthesia and surgery.

What to Expect

Your Gastric Sleeve Timeline

Our team supports you through each stage of preparation. How fast you move is set mostly by how quickly your tests are done.

  1. Consultation

Dr. K reviews your health, your past attempts and your goals, then recommends the sleeve or a better-suited option.

  2. Tests and Clearances

Medical clearances and an upper endoscopy, at our clinic or elsewhere. An EGD from the last five months counts.

  3. Getting Ready

You follow a required pre-surgery diet. Weight loss injections stop at least two weeks before surgery.

  4. Surgery Day

Dr. K performs your sleeve laparoscopically. Your hospital stay is part of the package.

  5. Back to Your Routine

Most patients return to work in 4 to 7 days and avoid lifting over 20 lbs while they heal.

The Same Surgeon at Every Step

The surgeon who meets you at your consultation is the one in the operating room and at your follow-up visits through your first year. Dr. K also contacts patients from his own cell phone, so questions between visits reach him directly.

I had the gastric sleeve in September of 2022. All I have to say is, I wish I did this much sooner.

Questions

FAQ About Gastric Sleeve in Hialeah, FL

Where do Hialeah, FL patients see Dr. K for a gastric sleeve?

Our office is at 7330 SW 62nd Pl, Suite 210, in South Miami, and it is open Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Patients from Hialeah come to us for their consultation and their follow-up visits. Your first year of follow-up is already included in the surgery package.

How much weight can I expect to lose with a gastric sleeve?

It depends on your starting weight, your health and how closely you follow your eating and activity plan. Most of the loss happens during the first year. One of our patients wrote in her Google review that she was 60 pounds down four months after her sleeve, and Dr. K sets realistic goals for your body at your consultation.

Will a gastric sleeve leave noticeable scars?

Dr. Keshavarzi performs the sleeve laparoscopically, through a few small incisions rather than one large opening. The marks are small and usually fade over the months after surgery. He can show you where the incisions go during your consultation.

Is a gastric sleeve reversible?

No. The part of the stomach that is removed cannot be replaced, so we make sure the sleeve is the right choice before you commit. If you prefer an option that removes no stomach, Dr. K also performs endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty and places the ORBERA gastric balloon.

Can Dr. K perform my pre-surgery endoscopy?

Yes. You can have your EGD done with Dr. Keshavarzi or at another facility. When he performs it, the procedure itself is included in your surgery cost and a separate $750 hospital fee applies.

How quickly can I schedule my gastric sleeve?

Surgery dates are often available within the current month. The pace depends on how quickly you complete your required tests and medical clearances. Patients who want to move fast can ask about our Expedited Gastric Sleeve option.
