Dr. K on the weight loss myths patients bring to him most.

The Basics

What Is Bariatric Surgery in The Hammocks, FL

Bariatric surgery reduces how much the stomach holds, and some procedures also change how food moves through the gut.

Smaller stomachYou feel full after a few bites rather than a full plate.
Quieter appetiteHunger tends to ease, so the new portions are easier to keep.
Health beyond weightLosing weight can ease conditions such as diabetes and joint pain.

Dr. K performs most operations laparoscopically, through a few small incisions, and offers endoscopic procedures done through the mouth with no incisions at all. Because one surgeon handles your surgery, your endoscopy and your follow-up, nothing gets lost between offices.

The operation is a tool. The staged diet and the visits in the year that follows are what turn early weight loss into a lasting result.

Your Options

Seven Ways Dr. K Treats Weight

Many practices offer one or two procedures. Dr. K performs all of these himself, so the recommendation follows your health rather than a single specialty.

OptionApproachHow it worksOften a fit when
Gastric SleeveLaparoscopicMost of the stomach is removed, leaving a narrow tube that holds far less. You have a significant amount to lose and want one durable operation.
Low BMI Gastric SleeveLaparoscopicOur Mini Sleeve applies the sleeve technique to patients with less weight to lose.Diet and medication have stalled, but you fall below typical surgical criteria.
Teen Gastric SleeveLaparoscopicA gastric sleeve for adolescents aged 14 to 17, with the family involved in the plan.A teen's weight is affecting health and supervised programs have not worked.
Gastric BypassLaparoscopicA small stomach pouch connects directly to the small intestine, bypassing part of digestion.Reflux, type 2 diabetes or a larger goal point toward rerouting.
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)EndoscopicSutures placed from inside the stomach fold it into a smaller shape. You want restriction without incisions on the abdomen.
ORBERA Gastric BalloonEndoscopicA soft balloon takes up space in the stomach for a set period, then is removed. You want a temporary, nonsurgical start.
Medical Weight LossMedicationA personalized plan with weight loss injections, nutrition guidance and regular check-ins.You prefer to start without a procedure or want support around surgery.

Signs Surgery May Be Your Next Step

Surgery is for people whose weight is affecting their health and who have not kept it off with diet, exercise or medication alone.

Your consultation answers the question. Dr. K reviews your history and past attempts first, and sometimes his advice is a medical plan or an endoscopic option rather than an operation.

How much longer will it be "someday"?

  • The weight returns after every serious diet, however carefully you follow it.
  • You live with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea or joint pain tied to your weight.
  • Weight loss injections worked, but the pounds come back when you stop.
  • You have less to lose and want to know whether a low BMI sleeve, ESG or a balloon fits.
  • You have a hiatal hernia or reflux and want it assessed alongside weight loss.
  • You are ready to follow a nutrition plan and keep your follow-up visits.

What to Expect

From Consultation to Your First-Year Visit

The path most of our gastric sleeve patients follow, with the timeframes we see in practice.

  1. Consultation

Dr. K reviews your health, goals and past attempts, then recommends a procedure or a medical plan. You leave knowing your options and your cost.

  2. Testing

Medical clearances and an upper endoscopy, or EGD, are required. Labs through our recommended doctor return in about 48 hours, and an EGD from the past 5 months counts.

  3. Preparation

You follow a pre-surgery diet and stop any weight loss injections at least 2 weeks before your date. Once testing is complete, dates are often open within the same month.

  4. Surgery

Dr. K performs your procedure in the hospital. For a gastric sleeve, the hospital stay is part of the package price.

  5. Recovery

Most sleeve patients return to work in 4 to 7 days and avoid lifting over 20 pounds while healing. Visits through the first year guide you through each diet stage.

Questions

FAQ About Bariatric Surgery in The Hammocks, FL

What is involved with bariatric surgery?

It starts with a consultation, then medical clearances and an upper endoscopy before your date. Most of our operations are laparoscopic, done through a few small incisions, and endoscopic options are performed through the mouth. Afterward you move through staged diet phases and follow-up visits for the first year.

Which bariatric surgery has the longest hospital stay?

Gastric bypass is the more involved operation, so it usually means the longest stay of the options we offer. A gastric sleeve typically needs a shorter stay, and endoscopic procedures such as ESG and the gastric balloon usually do not need an overnight stay. Dr. K tells you what to expect for your procedure at the consultation.

How much does bariatric surgery cost in Florida?

Florida prices vary with the procedure and with what each quote leaves out. Our gastric sleeve package is $14,000 and includes the hospital stay, the surgeon's fee, all hospital-related fees and follow-up visits for the first year. Other procedures are priced after your consultation, and financing through Cherry is available.

How much weight will I lose 3 months after gastric sleeve?

There is no single number, because it depends on your starting weight, how closely you follow the diet stages and how active you are. Weight usually comes off fastest in the first months after a sleeve. Your follow-up visits track progress and adjust the plan if loss slows.

How far is your office from The Hammocks, FL?

Our office is at 7330 SW 62nd Pl in South Miami, east of The Hammocks along Kendall Drive. Your consultation, pre-op visits and first-year follow-ups all take place at this one office with Dr. K.

Can I have weight loss surgery if I only have a little weight to lose?

Possibly. Dr. K performs a low BMI gastric sleeve, which we call the Mini Sleeve, for patients who sit below typical surgical criteria. ESG, the gastric balloon and medical weight loss are other options he may suggest.

When can I go back to work after bariatric surgery?

Most gastric sleeve patients return to work 4 to 7 days after surgery. You should not lift more than 20 pounds while you heal. If your job is physical, Dr. K will tell you when heavier work is safe for you.
