Candidacy

Who Bariatric Surgery Is For

Candidacy is decided at your consultation, from your weight history, your health conditions and your goals. Having low BMI and teen options means fewer patients are told surgery is not for them.

Often a good fit

  • Adults whose weight is affecting blood pressure, blood sugar, sleep, joints or mobility
  • People who have lost weight with diets or medication and regained it
  • Patients with less weight to lose who may suit the low BMI Mini Sleeve
  • Teens ages 14 to 17 evaluated for the teen gastric sleeve
  • Anyone ready to follow the pre-surgery diet and first-year follow-up

What can delay or rule out surgery

  • Medical conditions that are not yet under control
  • A current pregnancy or one planned in the near future
  • Active alcohol or drug misuse
  • Not being ready to change how you eat after surgery
  • Missing clearances or endoscopy, which we help you complete

What to expect

Your Path From Okeechobee County to Surgery

Our South Miami office is about a two and a half hour drive from Okeechobee County, so we plan around the trip. Much of the preparation can happen close to home, and your surgery date is set as soon as your testing is complete.

  1. Consultation

Dr. K reviews your history, explains which procedures fit and answers your questions. You leave knowing his recommendation, the steps ahead and the cost.

  2. Testing Near Home

Medical clearances and an upper endoscopy, called an EGD, are required. Both can be done with physicians near you, and an EGD from the past five months is accepted.

  3. Getting Ready

A pre-surgery diet prepares your body for the operation. Weight loss injections stop at least two weeks before surgery.

  4. Surgery in Miami

Dr. K performs your procedure himself, using laparoscopic or endoscopic techniques depending on the operation you choose.

  5. Back to Routine

Most patients return to work 4 to 7 days after the procedure. Avoid lifting more than 20 pounds while you heal.

Questions

FAQ About Bariatric Surgery in Okeechobee County, FL

How much does bariatric surgery cost for patients in Okeechobee County, FL?

Our gastric sleeve package is $14,000 and includes the surgeon's fee, your hospital stay, all hospital-related fees and first-year follow-up appointments. Financing is available, including 24 months at 0% interest and monthly payments as low as $320. Pricing for other procedures is reviewed at your consultation.

What disqualifies you from getting bariatric surgery?

Surgery can be delayed or ruled out by medical conditions that are not yet under control, a current or planned pregnancy, active alcohol or drug misuse, or not being ready to follow the diet and follow-up afterward. Many of these are reasons to wait rather than a final no. Dr. K reviews your history and tells you where you stand.

Do I have to travel to Miami for every step?

No. Medical clearances, lab work and the upper endoscopy can be done with physicians near you, and an EGD from the past five months is accepted. Your surgery takes place in Miami with Dr. K.

Do I need an endoscopy before bariatric surgery?

Yes, an upper endoscopy, called an EGD, is required before surgery. You can have it done near home or with Dr. K. When he performs it, the endoscopy is included in your procedure cost and a $750 hospital fee applies.

Can I keep taking weight loss injections before surgery?

Weight loss injections must be stopped at least two weeks before surgery. Dr. K will tell you when to stop and how the pre-surgery diet fits around it.

How soon can I go back to work after gastric sleeve surgery?

Most patients return to work 4 to 7 days after the procedure. You should not lift anything heavier than 20 pounds while you heal, so plan help for heavier tasks at home.

Which bariatric procedure is right for me?

That depends on your weight history, your health conditions and how much weight you want to lose. Dr. K performs the gastric sleeve, low BMI Mini Sleeve, teen gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, ESG and ORBERA gastric balloon, and oversees medical weight loss, so he can recommend the option that fits rather than the only one available.
