The Procedure

How Gastric Bypass in Coral Gables, FL Works

Gastric bypass makes the stomach far smaller and changes the path food takes through the small intestine. The most common version, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, combines both changes in one operation.

The surgeon first divides the top of the stomach to create a pouch about the size of an egg. That pouch is then connected directly to a lower loop of the small intestine. Food skips the rest of the stomach and the first part of the intestine, so you feel full on small portions and absorb fewer calories.

The larger part of the stomach is not removed. It stays in place and keeps making digestive juices, which rejoin the food further down. The operation is performed laparoscopically, through a few small incisions, the minimally invasive approach Dr. Keshavarzi trained in during his fellowship in laparoscopic, bariatric and robotic surgery.

Patients come to our South Miami office from Coral Gables for every visit, from the first consultation to long-term follow-up.

Is It Right for You

Signs Gastric Bypass May Be the Right Fit

Dr. K conducts every consultation himself and reviews your full history before recommending any procedure. Gastric bypass is most often considered for patients in these situations.

1

Type 2 Diabetes or Prediabetes

Bypass changes the gut hormones that help regulate blood sugar, so it is often weighed for patients whose weight and blood sugar are linked.

2

Heartburn and Acid Reflux

Because the new pouch makes very little acid, bypass is commonly favored over the sleeve for patients with significant reflux.

3

Weight-Related Conditions

High blood pressure, sleep apnea and joint pain that improve as weight comes down are common reasons patients start the conversation.

4

Results That Did Not Last

Diet plans, exercise programs or medication helped for a while, then the weight returned.

5

Coming Off GLP-1 Injections

You want a longer-term option than weekly injections and are ready to plan the switch with your surgeon.

6

Ready for New Habits

You are prepared for a staged post-op diet, smaller meals and daily vitamins as part of everyday life.

Not sure bypass is the one? Dr. Keshavarzi also offers the gastric sleeve, a low BMI Mini Sleeve, a teen gastric sleeve program for ages 14 to 17, ESG, the ORBERA balloon and medical weight loss. Your consultation covers whichever option fits.

Gastric Bypass Compared With the Gastric Sleeve

These are the two operations patients ask about most. Dr. Keshavarzi performs both, so the comparison you hear in consultation is a real choice between them.

How it is doneLaparoscopic surgery through small incisionsLaparoscopic surgery through small incisions
What changesA small pouch is created and joined to a lower part of the small intestineMost of the stomach is removed, leaving a narrow sleeve
Intestines reroutedYesNo
Stomach tissue removedNo, the larger part is bypassed and stays in placeYes

Lifelong vitaminsYes, including B12, iron and calciumYes, usually a lighter routine

Two nonsurgical routes are also available. Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty folds and stitches the stomach from inside with no incisions, and the ORBERA balloon takes up space in the stomach for a set period before it is removed.

Our approach: GLP-1 medication, bariatric surgery including gastric bypass, nutrition coaching, psychological support and concierge follow-up, combined for each patient.

Questions

FAQ About Gastric Bypass in Coral Gables, FL

How far is your office from Coral Gables, FL?

Our office is at 7330 SW 62nd Pl, Suite 210, in South Miami, a short drive from Coral Gables. Your consultation, pre-surgery visits and follow-up appointments all take place there, with the same surgeon at every step.

Is gastric bypass done with small incisions?

Yes. Gastric bypass is performed laparoscopically, through a few small incisions with a camera and long, thin instruments. Dr. Keshavarzi completed a fellowship in laparoscopic, bariatric and robotic surgery at Jackson South Medical Center.

How soon can I have gastric bypass surgery?

Your surgery date depends on how quickly your required tests are completed. Results from our recommended doctor come back within 48 hours, and an endoscopy done within the last 5 months is accepted. Patients who finish testing promptly can often be scheduled within weeks.

Will I need vitamins for life after gastric bypass?

Yes. Because food bypasses part of the small intestine, gastric bypass patients take vitamin and mineral supplements for life, typically including B12, iron and calcium. Dr. K and our team set your supplement plan and check on it at follow-up visits.

I take a GLP-1 injection now. Can I still have gastric bypass?

Yes. Many patients move from weight loss injections to surgery for a longer-term result. The injections must be stopped at least 2 weeks before your surgery date, and Dr. K plans that timing with you.

Does Dr. K stay involved after surgery?

Yes. Dr. Keshavarzi keeps in touch with patients from his own cell phone during recovery and continues to see them as they lose weight. Patients regularly mention in their reviews that he stayed with them years after surgery.
