The Procedure

How Gastric Sleeve Surgery Works for Coral Gables, FL Patients

A gastric sleeve, also called a sleeve gastrectomy or VSG, makes the stomach much smaller so you feel full on far less food. Dr. Keshavarzi performs it laparoscopically, working through a few small incisions with a camera and long, thin instruments.

During the operation he removes the larger, stretchy outer curve of the stomach. What remains is a narrow tube about the shape of a banana. Food still travels the same path through your stomach and intestines, so nothing is rerouted and the sleeve does not rely on an implanted device.

When the evaluation finds a hiatal hernia, it can often be repaired during the same operation. Because Dr. Keshavarzi also performs gastric bypass, ESG and the gastric balloon, your consultation compares the sleeve with real alternatives rather than steering every patient to one surgery.

Is It Right for You

Candidates for Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Dr. K conducts every consultation himself and decides with you whether a sleeve fits your health. Patients who do well with a gastric sleeve usually share several of these traits.

  • You live with obesity and a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea or joint pain.
  • Diet, exercise or weight loss medication has not given you lasting results.
  • You are taking GLP-1 injections and want a longer-term option. The injections are stopped at least 2 weeks before surgery.
  • You are ready to follow a staged post-op diet and keep up new eating habits for life.

Not quite the standard sleeve patient? Dr. Keshavarzi also offers a low BMI Mini Sleeve for patients with less weight to lose, and a teen gastric sleeve program for ages 14 to 17.

How long is recovery after a gastric sleeve?

Most patients return to work 4 to 7 days after the procedure. During early recovery you should not lift anything heavier than 20 pounds. Your diet moves through stages, and Dr. K follows your progress at every visit.

Do I need an endoscopy before gastric sleeve surgery?

Yes. An upper endoscopy (EGD) and medical clearances are required before surgery. You can have the EGD with Dr. Keshavarzi or with another doctor. When Dr. Keshavarzi performs it, the procedure is included in your surgery cost and a $750 hospital fee applies.

Can I have a gastric sleeve if I am taking weight loss injections?

Yes. Many patients come to us after using GLP-1 injections. The injections must be stopped at least 2 weeks before surgery, and Dr. K will plan that timing with you.

What if I have less weight to lose?

Dr. Keshavarzi also performs a low BMI Mini Sleeve for patients who carry less excess weight than a standard sleeve is designed for. Non-surgical options such as endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, the ORBERA gastric balloon and medical weight loss are also available. Your consultation compares them for your health and goals.
